Smoking rate up from 27% to 29% since 2002 Tuesday, 16 June 2009
New figures from the Department of Health put the overall smoking rate at 29%, compared to 27% in 2002.
The rate of smoking is higher among women at 31%, compared to 27% of men.
Smoking is also more popular among younger age groups, with more than one-third of 18- to 29-year-olds now engaging in the habit.

I think we can blame Actors Smoking in Films for the increase in smoking among young people? There has been an avalanche of smoking promotion as a result of more films being shown on TV DVD’s & Internet etc. Sky TV alone broadcast over 450 films a week 80% promote smoking via actors smoking -role models etc.
Hopefully the World Health Organisations new report “Smoke Free Movies From Evidence To Action” & Obama’s FDA regulation of tobacco will impact Actors Smoking by banning smoking in films. Also tobacco should not be for sale! Where’s the consumer protection? It should only be available from chemists under prescription! We need Urgent Action Now! I met Stuart outside the RCJ on 10/12 June 09 (where I attended the Northern Rock Shareholder Appeal).
I wish to offer my congratulations and gratitude to him for this fantastic effort to help reduce or eliminate the impact of suffering and death on all beings, especially children, caused as a result of 'promotion' of smoking via film and TV actors.
We all know the strength of and financial motivations for cigarettes to be promoted, not least by 'honourable' MPs who are happy to continue letting the Govt taking the duty & tax revenues from this drug - no doubt partly to help pay for their second homes or moats or other extravagant perks & advantages for 'public service'
All power to you, Stuart.
Dennis
